Marketing Tactics
Marketing Tactics for TCP at Your
Worksite
The following marketing tactics were
sent to us by ETC's as examples of techniques for motivating fellow employees to use alternative transportation methods for their
commute to work. If you have an idea to share for a marketing tactic
that worked well at your worksite, let us know and we will add it to
the list as a reference for other ETCs.
1. Goodie Bag Raffle
Every few months we have a raffle for
the people who have been regularly using alternative transportation.
The prize is a free goodie bag provided by the Transportation
Choices coalition. The goodie bag includes a canvas lunch bag, a
stainless steel coffee travel mug, a calculator and a pen.
People like the prizes and look forward to their chance to win!
2. Clean Commuter of the Quarter
Hanging on the wall near the front
entrance, we have a plaque with the name and picture of the
"Clean Commuter of the Quarter". Using the Monthly
Tracking Forms from the Incentive Program, I add up the total points
each employee received for using alternative transportation
throughout the month. For each quarter (e.g. January to March, April
to June, etc.) I total up the points, and the employee with the
highest total is designated the "Clean Commuter of the
Quarter". The employee has their name engraved on the plaque
and their picture posted. They also receive a goodie bag
provided by the Transportation Choices coalition, which includes a
lunch bag, travel mug, pen and calculator. It only takes me about 5
minutes each month but the competition and the prize have really
helped to motivate people to start using and to continue using
alternatives for their commute. Another thing that has been great
about the "Clean Commuter of the Quarter" program at our
office is that over the past two years, a different employee has
received the designation each time.
3. Office Challenge
For events like Rideshare Week and
Bike Month, we have set office goals to double our office's use of
alternative transportation. We all keep track of our alternative
transportation use on our Monthly Tracking Forms for the Incentive
Program and compare the results with our average. If we achieve our
goal, we treat ourselves to an office pizza party. It's a fun to
work together to meet the challenge.
4. Commute Pricing Program
Our program was designed to address a high
demand for limited parking spaces at work but was also a way to
encourage both fun in the work place (via Friday's lottery drawing)
as well as getting people to come to work by alternative,
environmentally friendly, congestion reducing ways. We started a
pricing system based upon commute mode. Near the front entrance, we
put a copy of the pricing
list and a weekly calendar for each employee to record their
commute fee for each day they worked. We also
had two bowls, one for entries into the weekly pool (one entry for
every day you worked during the week) and the other to collect the
daily fees. Each Friday we had drawing and the winner received all
of the money collected for the week. To work best, this program requires everyone to
participate and someone to make sure that everyone is anti-ing up
change from their pockets.
